When it comes to gender and media, existing media coverage on gender issues remains largely stereotypical and primarily centered on violence. Whether it is print, broadcast, or online spaces, coverage of gender inequality issues or coverage of issues with a gender perspective in Malaysian media, is minimal and far between.
In February 2020, we unpacked some of the key issues surrounding gender and media based on our report which we did in collaboration with the Institute of Journalists Malaysia and with support from UNESCO. Check out the full report here.
The media’s toxic lens of gender, particularly women and individuals with non-conforming gender identities, has always been in the favor of sensationalism, which only ignores, or worse, further silences the voices of vulnerable peoples.
